WHAT IS BIOSECURITY?
Biosecurity is the practice of protecting places from threats posed by the introduction of new diseases, plants, or animals that do not naturally occur there. This is especially important on islands like Ulithi Atoll, where native wildlife-such as seabirds and sea turtles-are highly vulnerable to invasive predators. When species like rats or monitor lizards are accidentally introduced, they can devastate local animal populations and disrupt traditional ways of life.
On Ulithi Atoll, the community is working hard to raise awareness about the dangers of invasive species and to put systems in place to prevent their accidental introduction. By developing biosecurity guidelines, training residents, and monitoring for new threats, Ulithi aims to protect its unique ecosystem and ensure a healthy, sustainable future for both its people and wildlife.
